Gifts at Work

Farm at the Arb

At the new Farm at the Arb, agriculture takes center stage. The Minnesota Landscape Arboretum has long been a leader in horticultural research, outreach, and education, but this is its first large-scale initiative focused on farming. In the Red Barn, built in 1920 and recently renovated thanks to corporate and individual donors, the public will learn how food is grown, processed, and sold—and enjoy weddings and other events. Outdoors, work continues on demonstration areas. Photography by Steve Niedorf

Visitors learn about crops (such as interesting gourds) that grow well in our state, thanks to gifts from the Minnesota Soybean Research and Promotion Council, the Minnesota Corn Growers Association, and the Minnesota Wheat Research and Promotion Council.

2

Renovation and modernization of the Red Barn, including the addition of an elevator and bathrooms, was funded completely by donors. Signs throughout the building share stories, quotes, and photos about the barn’s history.

3

A new maintenance shed, made possible with a gift from Al and Mary Agnes McQuinn, will allow workers quick access to the tools and supplies they need to keep flowers, grasses, and other plants around the barn looking  beautiful.

4

Just outside this window is the Orchard and Vineyard Walk, still under construction, which will feature apples and grapes developed at the University of Minnesota. It was made possible by a gift from the Head Family Foundation.

Future plans for the site include a forage plot and summer kitchen next to the barn, supported by Land O’Lakes, the Cargill Foundation, and other donors. When the kitchen building is finished, visitors can attend cooking demos and other presentations.
