Sole-ful tribute

Photography by Terry Tollefson

More than 400 horseshoes. That’s how many artist Frank Schwegel used to create a 7-foot-tall horse sculpture that stands outside the equine center at the University of Minnesota Crookston (UMC).

Funded by donors, the sculpture honors Sheena Engelbert Malnar, ’08 B.S., who was killed in an accident in 2017. Malnar was involved in every aspect of UMC’s equine science program and was a member of the equestrian team.

“I am amazed by the generosity of the people who chose to give to make the sculpture a reality,” says UMC assistant equestrian coach Nicky Overgaard.
